Five Action-Packed Sports Out of Home Ads and Campaigns

Without ticket sales, sports teams and sporting events would disappear. But like any other product, teams and events need to build awareness and interest before anyone will buy tickets.

It’s all about excitement. If people aren’t excited, they’re not buying tickets. Bringing the sport to life on out of home ads can do just that.

Here are five of our past billboards that fueled fanatical frenzy.

1. Kwik Trip and the Minnesota Vikings

Kwik Trip was the Official Gas Station Sponsor of the Minnesota Vikings, but they weren’t really capitalizing on it. We pitched them the idea of using billboards to link the convenience store brand with the team and bring more fans into the stores. Including a unique set of two sequential billboards for a quarterback-receiver concept.

Billboards that just spell out “official sponsor of” isn’t our style. We brought football feats to life with a Kwik Trip twist. The strap line “Where Vikings Refuel” brought all aspects together—football, food, fuel, and fans.

2. Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

San Diego has Comic-Con. New Orleans has Mardi Gras. Houston has the Livestock Show and Rodeo.

For those of you smirking at the idea of a livestock show, just hush up and read. HLSR attracts over 2 million people every year. It’s a big effing deal.

And a big effing deal deserves out of home creative to match. In 2019, we concepted this idea for their agency. “The most dangerous eight seconds in sports” is stretched out over four weeks with new billboard vinyls posted every Monday.

Anticipation mounts.

The dust settles.

The reveal is timed perfectly with the announcement of the HLSR lineup.

While it never made it out of the gate and onto the street—amongst our agency partners, this campaign bucked any previous notions of what out of home could, and should do.

3. South Carolina Stingrays

Have you noticed our knack for transforming billboards from fixed displays into a spectacle happening right before your eyes? That’s a core principle we strive for and practically vital for sports ads.

We turned the upcoming season into an event for this minor league hockey team—Stingrays 3D. And not just a picture of a puck, a puck absolutely obilerating the billboard.

4. 8th Wonder Brewery

We’re blurring the line on “sports billboards” for this one, and if you’re not a Houston native, it might take some education. For decades, the Houston Astrodome was known as the Eighth Wonder of the World—the namesake of this brewery. We dismissed the idea of a still photo of a beer glass and leaned into the sports reference to give these ads some action.

“Faux’m team.” C’mon, that’s some incredible copywriting, right?

If anyone at 8th Wonder Brewery is reading this, this campaign is still up for grabs. As they say in Texas, “come and take it.” But seriously, we’ll give it to you.

5. Family Circle Cup

I’m back and forth on tennis.

Excuse my dad jokes.

But the action in tennis is literally back and forth. Putting media planning and creative concepts together, we found two billboards that could bring that to life. Pictures don’t do this campaign justice. But please take my word for it: driving between these billboards actually felt like being in the middle of the action. A passenger in my car actually ducked as we drove past these billboards.
